Well, I didn’t mean to finish this tonight, but I accidentally read 200 pages in one sitting and here we are.
I’ve always loved The Sound of Music musical/movie. But I didn’t know/remember that it was based on real people. I knew I wanted to read this book no matter what, so I didn’t even read the description—I assumed this was a novelization of the musical/movie. It straddles the POV of one of Hammerstein’s employees and Maria’s life.
I felt such palpable dread as Germany/Hitler progressed. The fact that this family was on the last train out of Austria gave me goosebumps.
I wish there was a little more romance and story rather than summary in the later portion of Maria’s story. We had so many details at first that glossed into sweeping summaries of years at a time. Maria as a character was so interesting, and her perception of the truth is fascinating.
If you’re a fan of the Sound of Music and you like historical fiction, pick this up. I wish it was longer and that I’d connected with the characters more, but I’m glad I read this. I’ll definitely be watching the movie this weekend.
