This book is what happens when two conflict-averse people come together.
Wyn and Harriet have been together for 9 years before he randomly breaks up with her over a phone call and now they’re stuck in their annual trip with their friends and they have to pretend to still be engaged.
(Minor spoilers)
Wyn is the human embodiment of avoidant attachment style and Harriet is a type A people-pleasing neurosurgery trainee both going through a second chance romance.
He was all boohoo I am stupid and you are brilliant I couldn’t hold you back, and she was all I thought I made you unhappy, then he was all
you didn’t fight with me I thought you didn’t care, and she was all I love you and he was all ok me too. The end. 400+ pages for you.
They didn’t feel like a believable couple, I thought both of them handled their breakup poorly and I have better communication skills with my Starbucks barista than they did with each other despite them being engaged.
The book started off slow but got considerably better from the 70% mark onwards. It centres on more than just their relationship - there is a strong found family element, and the idea of friends growing up/apart. It also has a heavy “my parents sucked so now I have a dysfunctional view on love” theme, and a lesson about not tying your worth to your job. A lot of things were happening which added colour to the plot but it almost became too much at one point.
Emily Henry’s writing is always beautiful but something about this book prevented me from fully investing in it. I’ve gone to happier places with her other books.

FOUND/CHOSEN FAMILY IS MY BREAD AND BUTTER!!!!!!! Ugh I LOVED this book so MUCH!!!!!!!
The best part about this book was I wasn’t just invested in the romantic leads, I was so so so invested in EVERYONE!!!
As a certified “I Love and Would Die For My Close Friend Group Who is Also My Family” gorlie, this one just touched my heart in such a way
I wasn’t sure how everything would tie together bc it was on the shorter side, but i loved this because I felt like there was only one big “oh no it’s falling apart” “twist” and usually Em Hen has a few of those (ie “we should be friends” to the “oh no it’s all over” in many of her books), the story progresses beautifully
The only lil thing for me is that I was not kicking my feet at Wyn, he is not my Type for a romantic lead (Miles from Funny Story had me blushing waaaay more).
SPOILER BELOW!
Hell yeah to any book normalizing antidepressants which did I’m fact change my lil life. I’m chubbier AND I don’t want to die. And I want everyone to feel that way!!

you’re fucking kidding me this is a new all-time favourite… i could’ve read this in one sitting but i didn’t want to bring it with me to the beach and ruin it with sunscreen so i only had a half hour window post-beach pre-going out for dinner to read

I strongly did not like this book but I got through it. Characters annoying, nothing happens, just a lighthearted romance if that’s yo vibe

I absolutely loved this book! I actually didn’t want to put it down. I do feel like sometimes I was getting a bit confused by some Wyn and Harriet interactions but overall, I found the book extremely adorable. It made me wish for a summer with my best friends to reminisce on our glory days, but I do like how the book talks a lot about accepting change and growing up. It’s a great story for young adults who may feel like they’re stuck in life!
