This one will stick with me for a long time. A timely and disturbing fictionalized take on what took place in the last few years politically and socially. Can something be dark and uplifting at once? The authors’ commentary throughout the book tickled me, despite not being a fan of fourth-wall violation. His thoughts on empathy are thought provoking and something I’ve struggled with myself.

So if I had finished this tale, and you were to tell me that a creator of many a show that I have watched wrote it, it wouldn’t take a ton of reflection time before blurting out, “Noah Hawley.”

I really enjoyed this book for the first half. The second half just seemed too unbelievable. I couldn’t keep the huge cast of characters straight, and their backstories were confusing. Major plot points happened with little to no reflection by the characters. I didn’t like the lack of resolution of some of the big plot points.

What a wild piece of work. There are so many faucets of Anthem that we can dive right into, but my biggest take away is the world he writes is very real. It's not a fantasy or a dystopian, it's a mirror reflecting back and that is the scariest realization. It was gritty and uncomfortable because it felt so relevant and familiar. Please get this book into as many hands as possible.

The premise is incredibly intriguing but the novel is an overall slog to get through. A wave of teen suicide is the catalyst for the plot but too many characters and numerous story arcs make for difficult reading. The beginning is quite promising but the novel soon gets bogged down with long-winded paragraphs and extraneous story arcs that really do not add much to the original plot. Readers will recognize the fictionalized versions of real-life people and events that are peppered throughout Anthem. The epilogue is interesting but it takes way too long to get there.
