such an interesting way of writing a book - i loved the authors notes sprinkled throughout honestly. also - the little plot write up on the cover did NOT prepare me for what this book is about!! in a good way!!

I feel like decades from now Anthem will be the book that becomes a cult classic as a way of trying to piece together and understand what was happening during this time in American history. Hawley addresses so many social, political, racial, and environmental issues that are part of our everyday lives now in 2022-2023. This book is part satire, part truth, part hope for our future, and overall just an interesting read.

Or at least I thought it was a great read right up until the end and then it all just kinda gets thrown together and I felt like the end did not justify the rest of this spectacular novel.

It will certainly make you think and reflect on humanity and our choices.

This book reads like 50 left* wing extremists shouting into the echo chamber. There were too many story lines and characters and world events to follow without flipping back or trying to Google a character sheet. I made it to 45% of the audiobook and had to stop. This book could have been shortened by well over 25% to take out just some of the ranting and it would have been a much better story. At this point I don't even care why the kids are committing suicide, I just wanted the plot to progress.

*Edited right to left. I very hurriedly wrote this review in disgust.

Hawley has written a lot of my favorite television from the last decade or so. However. Despite some very interesting ideas and solid writing in the first half, this did not work.

Utterly terrifying. Far too close to the truth. Thankful I am in the last quarter of my life.

Was looking forward to this book, and it started off ok, but it turned quickly into a hot mess. Too chaotic for me-could not process one impending disaster before being bombarded by another one. I understand where he's coming from, as contemplating the future can be overwhelming and frustrating, but hitting me over the head with every single thing wrong with our world didn't help me at all. I ended up skimming through the book at a certain point, when I realized that I also couldn't believe the way some of the teenagers in the book were speaking and thinking- didn't seem authentic to me.

This is not good for your anxiety levels.
