I think the author wrote this book while in an incandescent rage about the state of our world at large. This is a giant middle-finger (eff u) to the Methuselahan leaders of the world who have created such a dystopian and chaotic way of life, that in the fictional version shown in this book, young people begin to opt out in the most stark and direct of ways. This is not an easy book to read, and I don't think it quite coalesced. I admire the author for getting his point across though.

Don’t waste your time thinking this book will explore what it lays out as the premise: a new pandemic hits the world – one where teenagers are committing suicide for no apparent reason. I’ll admit, it’s a very interesting concept. I picked up the book thinking it could be an intriguing sci-fi dystopian thriller. I was wrong.

The best part of dystopian novels is that eerie feeling you get that whispers, “this could be your world soon. Isn’t this so relevant to current times?” Well, anyone who gets that feeling while reading this book is completely delusional, should disconnect from the internet for a few years, and go live their life. And I should have lived my life by putting this book down as a DNF, but I decided to blow through it in a day to get it over with instead.

There seems to be this omnipresent feeling of doom in our culture right now that screams our world is falling apart, people are irreversibly oppressed, we all have mental issues, politics is fucked, the other side is going to ruin your life, the world is dying, and there’s no hope for the future. And honestly I’m just not here to support any literature or media that preaches that message. So, I do not recommend this book. Read something better.

dnf at 34%  Just couldn't get behind the characters.

An important, thought-provoking book for our time. With some weirdness thrown into the mix. Really enjoyed the author's Vonnegut-like intrusions, allusions to books of all kinds (the Sneetches!) and movies ("fly you fool", Olaf in Frozen 2), and metaphors for our political system.
