I can’t imagine a circumstance in which this isn’t my favorite book of the year (it’s only February!). Tender, funny, moving, earth-shattering, quiet, all-encompassing.

Many writers I love reported this as one of their books of the year, and each time I’ve considered to go back to the book. I will do it. I find the author very interesting as well, but I’m afraid I’ve been into very deep and very real (not only in the literal sense) works of literature this year, and while I was completely captivated by the atmosphere of the book, especially during the first half, then the metaphors and fantasies became too easy, the playfulness became too banal for me to stay interested in the main character.
I did not feel any connection to the characters or story and found the writing style hard to get into. Once the book started referencing 9/11 I just had to put it down. I did not need an “alien’s” take on this event based on feeling no connection to the character.
