Interestingly, my review of the last book I read before this one (paraphrased) explained that there were two stories going on in that book... the surface story, which was a sci-fi romp, and a much more beautiful and subtle narrative happening beneath the surface.

This book, too, contains two stories.... a coming of age tale about our protagonist, Adina, and a sci-fi story about the fact that Adina is actually an alien who is living a life as a human, from birth through death, to learn what it is to be human, and hopefully save her own doomed race.

And that sounds awesome.... but the sci-fi story never really gelled. Adina's life story was interesting, but I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop, and for the bit about the doomed aliens to come more into focus. It never did. Maybe I'm just not the target audience for this one.
