I really thought I would love it and I wanted to love it so much… I just am not invested in the story, I don’t care about the characters so after 50% I decided to move on

Super interesting … kind of magical realism in a vaguely sci-fi premise. Or is it? It’s either about an extraterrestrial soul born into a baby during a difficult birth or maybe it’s about an autistic person who finds themselves to be  outside of the human experience. She believes she is on Earth to study humans and report back to her home world. Either way, as she grows up, Adina reports on the strangeness and the beauty and the pain of being human to her people via a fax machine. Her reports get published and sell wildly, and the meta commentary is that the people that read her book are also divided into those who believe she is an alien and those who believe she has autism or a mental illness.  It’s very engaging and i really enjoyed it! #5stars #2025Reads #Beautyland

This is a coming of age story of a girl who is supposed to be an alien. The coming of age aspect was good but it kind of lost me with the alien thing. Was she really an alien, though? Or was she just a girl who felt like an outsider?

- Not as sci-fi as I was hoping
- I really loved Adina's observations, lots of good quotes and takeaways
- The fact that she was (or wasn't) an alien was fun to think about but didn't move the plot much
- Lots of parallels with the little prince
