This is a YA horror novel, and it was such a fun read! I have to admit that I was not a fan of the ending (or the last quarter, really). I won't say more because I don't want to spoil anything, but it took an unexpected turn. Also, the narrator had a very flat voice. I would've liked more enthusiasm.

This was one of the first horror books I've read. I enjoyed it quite well, and it was close to being a perfect five-star for me, but when it comes to the horror genre—I tend to bump down ratings if I can guess the ending/if the ending is predictable. I loved the characters and I loved that the FMC was a lesbian. The book did keep me on the edge of my seat because I was expecting a 80's type slasher killer, but it wasn't that. That is one thing that shocked me, but as soon as I grasped at who was doing the killing, I pretty much predicted the ending and the plot twist tbh.

I know OF slasher movies... never watched them because I tend to not watch horror (I get scared VERY easily) but this was a book I fully expect would have become a cult classic horror movie if it came out as a movie in the 90s. It also gave me major The Quarry vibes (if you played that, you know what I mean... also probably the ONLY horror video game I have ever played). The twist in the end was very interesting and I do enjoy an ending that answers some questions while still leaving a bit of a mystery.

This is the first horror book I’ve finished, so take my review with a grain of salt. If I were comparing this to a horror movie (which I’ve seen much more of), I would give it a three star rating. It’s your run of the mill slasher experience. But I was at least able to get through it.
I was only able to get through it, because I thought the twist in the end was that it wasn’t real. But realizing that it was real in the end made it way more scary.
I did like reading a horror book from a black person’s perspective, although Charity still made some questionable choices. The characters were funny
and the deaths were gruesome
. I would definitely watch this if it were adapted into a movie. Im not likely to read more horror books after this, but I will read more of the authors other work that are not horror.

I thought the pacing was slow in the beginning because I was waiting for it to get scary and every time it did I felt like the tension was immediately released. However once the action kicked in it went until the very end. Also I would have liked more. It was a very short book but I could have read more about these characters and gotten more development. Especially Charity and her parents. I felt like I didn't know enough about her family dynamics. I felt like a lot of the mystery was revealed through dialogue and I would have preferred it come through exposition.
