i read this to check its suitability for the 12 yo readers who "want horror". (Short answer - no). BUT I loved it and was completely hooked.  As someone who only came to horror in my 50s, I am fairly unaware of the tropes employed by slasher films, referenced in this book.  So much fun, with a really great twist at the end.  The supernatural element was great too.  Can't wait to put this in the hands of the right 15yo.

I really enjoyed this book. It was a nice easy read but became very tense and had lots of good plot twists I am usually good at guessing what is going to happen next but this book kept me on my toes

This had such a cool premise—a slasher story taking place at an old campgrounds that currently houses a slasher interactive experience—and the main characters/employees were also interesting; I was invested in their relationships and drama. However, the way the story unfolded ended up disappointing me. The story suddenly took a turn once the plot reveals started and the slasher experience camp setting faded from importance, so imo it was a missed opportunity to capitalize on the unique setting. I didn’t like the direction we ended up heading and it felt kind of contrived and more just for shock factor than something that made sense for the story. Also, for all the nods to knowledge about horror movies, our main character was making stupid decisions with lack of self-preservation—which was a major annoyance factor. It wasn’t necessarily bad, but just didn’t live up to my expectations after the start.

I have never read a horror novel that so perfectly captured the essence of horror movies. A love letter to the slasher genre, an evisceration of the slasher genre. It hits all the tropes just right but remixes them in the best ways. It was not at all what I thought it would be but it was so well written that I was ready for anywhere it took me. Charity’s voice is the perfect blend of sardonic and earnest. Character arcs don’t typically get a lot of focus in the horror genre, but I didn’t mind so much here because bare minimum most of the characters were fleshed out enough to at least make me mourn them when they met their ends.

If you’re looking for a classic slasher with the meta commentary of Scream, but with a more queer gen z vibe - this is the book for you.

It’s scary and tense without being too gore heavy. But I have to say for folks who know a lot about horror movies these characters sure do the exact thing they know not to do! I didn’t see the end coming, which is fun but did leave me with a bunch of questions unanswered. All in all a fun teen scream read.
