August pick for Amy McCaw's YA Book Club 2023.

What a fantastic debut into horror. Once the insanity of the plot began and the real fear kicked in, I felt so sick in anticipation and discomfort.

I loved how fast paced this was but without feeling rushed or skimping on the detail at all - it was the perfect balance.

I enjoyed all the horror references and was looking forward for the potential of more Easter eggs for scenario's to come.

The whole plot being set at a horror camp simulation was so cool. It was the perfect backdrop and I loved how rich in its own history and legend it was. It felt so real.

We had a fantastic cast of characters and the pulled the story through with so much personality. I couldn't help but connect to all of the main players in some way.

The plot twist at the end was absolutely amazing! I was so shocked!

There were a couple of fun creepy moments around the halfway mark, but otherwise this was just bad. The escape room camp theme is abandoned after only one round and seems to only exist to make sure there are no kids at the summer camp. The characters are really bland - I kept forgetting Paige even existed until other people brought her up - and the 'plot twist' was goofy and borderline offensive.

Unfortunately the biggest sin to me in a slasher, aside from maybe the first two the kills were boring. A good slasher should be about over the top people being killed in over the top ways and this was just like "oh he's dead I guess".

Thanks to NetGalley and Bloomsbury YA for an advanced copy of You're Not Supposed to Die Tonight by Kalynn Bayron! If you're a fan of cult slasher films and summer thrillers, this book should definitely be on your TBR this summer. It's a quick read, but only because once you start reading, you'll have a hard time putting it down. One of those horror/thrillers that keeps you turning the pages!

While I'm not necessarily a fan of horror or slasher films, this story still hooked me. Generally, I find reading horror easier than watching it, as I'm more able to skip past some of the more gory parts (and there is gore and blood in this book, so beware!). So far, I haven't met a Kalynn Bayron book I haven't liked, and her writing has gotten even stronger since Cinderella is Dead. This is a new genre, but it's still just as well-written!

The format of this book follows the general format of slasher films. While it's more focused on plot than character, Bayron still packs some good character development within the story. There are twists and turns, and even one I didn't see coming! While I felt the ending was a tad bizarre, I think that's just part for the overall genre.

All in all, fans of summer camp themed horror films will absolutely love Bayron's latest book.

What a thrilling book!!! I so enjoyed reading this. At just barely 240 pages, it was a super quick read, but a lot of fun. I wasn't expecting it to be what it ended up being, so it was a nice surprise of a book. I think what I loved about it most was that it subverted a lot of my expectations. As someone who watches slashers and horror movies a lot, it was nice to read one that also was super exciting. I found myself reacting to it the way I would react to an actual slasher movie.

Charity is such a good character and I love the way Bayron took a different route to the Final Girl trope. The characters in this were really well done and it's surprising that Bayron was able to make them so dynamic in such a short amount of time. Ultimately, I'm not quite giving it 5 stars just because I wish it was a teeny bit longer. I think two pretty big scenes at the end and even the set up at the beginning could've been slower to build up the tension. The twists in this were especially good and very well-timed. One of them wasn't super surprising to me but I don't think it was necessarily meant to be the biggest twist, so that was fine. The rest of them were shocking and I really wasn't expecting them. But overall, this was a really cool book and I can see it being a favorite for many especially around the spooky time of the year!
