If you're in the mood for a kinda slasher movie in book form, this is exactly that. Its got some twists, some I enjoyed and others I did not. It is definitely strong in the YA feel so take that as you will. Overall a fairly unique story.

I enjoyed this until the 50% mark, but then it went off the rails a bit. I’d also be curious to know what Jewish readers thought.

A short fun slasher that is highly readable and fairly tense.

Its biggest shortcoming was the characters, who started out with great characterisation but slowly became puppets simply acting in ways that will continue the plot. That does happen a lot in horror, but with its fast pace and short page count it meant that I had no investment in whether these characters lived or died, so the tension waned towards the end and I didn't find any of the twists particularly shocking or captivating.

Still it was a fun time for an afternoon and a half and I think that's what it's trying to be, not the next literary masterpiece.

Not my favorite book by Bayron, but I still enjoyed it and liked how she played around with typical horror movie/book tropes. I think You're Not Supposed to Die Tonight would have benefited from being a little longer and thus giving a chance for some aspects to be fleshed out better.
I thought the Owl Society was interesting, but would have liked to learn more about them. It felt like we just got a vague overview. I also personally didn't love the supernatural elements, but I'm sure plenty of people will disagree on that. Finally, I was kinda expecting there to be a killing spree WHILE the game was going on so no one knew if it was real or not.

More of a cult folk horror than a slasher, and with a messy narrative structure, a cast of likeable teens with strong friendships, twists that I genuinely did not see coming, and visceral horror and gore made up for the book’s shortcomings.
