This books reads like a slasher movie feels, and I mean that in a complementary way. It details a girl working at a horror summer camp that suddenly becomes far too real.
If you like slasher films, you’ll probably like this, as it has most of the same tropes and somewhat nonsensical plot points. The one advantage is that the main character and love interest are actually multifaceted and fairly smart. They’re also a Black lesbian couple, and making something gay always makes it better.
Less gore than some horror books, but what it lacks in gore it makes up for in atmosphere, plot twists, and spooky vibes- by the last few chapters, my heart was racing and I was desperate to know what would happen next and who would survive

I absolutely loved this book! The ending took me completely by surprise and I was so into it! This is the first horror book that's actually scared me, and it's set the bar high!!

Also, there's a Sapphic relationship and a queer guy

The first half of this book was phenomenal. It was brilliantly campy, while still managing to create tension and be somewhat scary. When it hit the halfway mark, though, it took a turn that cheapened all the build-up.

I feel like the magic being introduced in the last third wasn't executed well

i read this to check its suitability for the 12 yo readers who "want horror". (Short answer - no). BUT I loved it and was completely hooked.  As someone who only came to horror in my 50s, I am fairly unaware of the tropes employed by slasher films, referenced in this book.  So much fun, with a really great twist at the end.  The supernatural element was great too.  Can't wait to put this in the hands of the right 15yo.

This had such a cool premise—a slasher story taking place at an old campgrounds that currently houses a slasher interactive experience—and the main characters/employees were also interesting; I was invested in their relationships and drama. However, the way the story unfolded ended up disappointing me. The story suddenly took a turn once the plot reveals started and the slasher experience camp setting faded from importance, so imo it was a missed opportunity to capitalize on the unique setting. I didn’t like the direction we ended up heading and it felt kind of contrived and more just for shock factor than something that made sense for the story. Also, for all the nods to knowledge about horror movies, our main character was making stupid decisions with lack of self-preservation—which was a major annoyance factor. It wasn’t necessarily bad, but just didn’t live up to my expectations after the start.
