I feel like the magic being introduced in the last third wasn't executed well

i read this to check its suitability for the 12 yo readers who "want horror". (Short answer - no). BUT I loved it and was completely hooked.  As someone who only came to horror in my 50s, I am fairly unaware of the tropes employed by slasher films, referenced in this book.  So much fun, with a really great twist at the end.  The supernatural element was great too.  Can't wait to put this in the hands of the right 15yo.

I’m not really familiar with the slasher sub-genre but damn that was good! I really enjoyed the whole concept of the terror simulation. At first I was just expecting a random killer appearing from nowhere but I loved how the story eventually unfolded!
The last pages really had me on the edge of my seat.
So many plot twists I couldn’t process 😱😱

So much fun! Like my own personal slasher movie was playing in my mind!

I enjoyed this until the 50% mark, but then it went off the rails a bit. I’d also be curious to know what Jewish readers thought.

More of a cult folk horror than a slasher, and with a messy narrative structure, a cast of likeable teens with strong friendships, twists that I genuinely did not see coming, and visceral horror and gore made up for the book’s shortcomings.

This is labeled as YA, but I think it reads like a middle grade. It's excellent in its suspense and jump scares. While some things were predictable, enough of the climax and antagonist were not that I really can't say it's a cheesy read. But only if you read it fast! If you take your time, you'll definitely see all the things coming and it won't be as fun.

Oh this was so good. It’s been like a half hour since I finished it and I still can’t form a coherent thought about this book due to all the adrenaline that’s going through me from speed reading the second half of the book.

You’re Not Supposed to Die Tonight is an amazing YA horror book that is a great homage to all of the amazing Final Girls from the classic horror movies. I highly recommend reading this. The scare factor is very real (I may or may not have screamed when my phone slipped off the couch. Lol.) and the face pace of the second act keeps you moving so fast that you don’t realize you are almost at the end of the book until you hit the title page for the epilogue. I did see one of the twists at the end before the main character did but didn’t see all of them and I loved being surprised at the bigger reveals. 10/10 Recommend!
