I was very pleasantly surprised by this one. Mull is one of my son's favorite authors (the Fablehaven series rivals his love for Harry Potter) and we had this one at home. Very creative world building g and a story that could be predictable but isn't thanks to Mull's creative plots twists. Definitely a series I will recommend to young adults looking for a fantasy/adventure series.

It's not as good as the Fablehaven series, but Mull again tells a compelling and interesting story.

Didn't really enjoy it. Problems solved too easily; kept on "seeing" the author writing it rather than being caught up in the story. Also, I despise cliffhangers.

This was good, but I didn't like it as much as the Fablehaven series by Brandon Mull. It's also aimed at a little bit older reader.

I have mixed feeling about this book. It was so slow and boring getting started and I hated the way Rachel was completely disregarded and there just to support Jason... but it ended just as it started to get interesting! I think I will go to the library to finish these rather than buy them.

I never really connected with this story. I have no trouble believing that teenagers can be smarter than adults give them credit for sometimes, but overall Jason just did not behave like a 13-year-old boy. By the end, I still wasn't sure why Jason and Rachel cared about the world they got pulled into or even about each other. For me, unfortunately, something was missing.

Ok, so really 4 1/2 stars, but I loved it! Brandon Mull makes believable characters and a believable world. He's also able to teach good principles through his story telling without being preachy. Fun, exciting story, interesting world, and a good moral: It's the quintessential blend of great adolescent lit. Now the only problem is having to wait for the next one in the series. :-( ....and I just checked...the 2nd book came out in March! Yay for me!

As crazy as it sounds, thirteen year old Jason is transported to another world through a hippo's mouth. Upon arrival in this new world, he learns a popular music band is making a statement by voluntarily sailing down a river to their death by waterfall. Because no one else will, Jason tries to save troupe but to no avail. He continues looking for someone who can help him return home and ends up at a library where he finds there used to be many passages between Earth (the Beyond) and this new world, but now no one knows where those passages lie other than the evil magician Maldor who is ruling this world. Jason also finds out that there is a word that when figured out will kill Maldor. Jason begins the quest to find the word in order to save the world and find a way home.
Not as fun as Fablehaven but Fablehaven fans who enjoyed the adventure, magic, and puzzles of the series will enjoy the same in this new series.
Grades 5-9th.
