I think that seeing Zoe's perspective was interesting but I think it could have been incorporated into Last Colony instead of stretching it out into a separate novel.
When I first picked up this book I was intrigued by the concept - it's essentially the same story as "The Last Colony" but told from a different person/perspective. Who would try something like that? It's ridiculous. But I have faith in Scalzi, if anyone can pull it off it'll be him.
I was wrong.
This just didn't work for me. The writing was smooth and flowing and 100% Scalzi but the problem I had that Scalzi didn't help me with was that I knew what was happening and I knew what was going to happen. I wanted to skip forward or put the book down - neither of which is a good thing for a reader.
I love John Scalzi and the Old Man's War Universe and I'm really looking forward to the The Human Division but this one was definitely a pass.
Not recommended.

probably between 3 & 4. sort of like a friend telling you about their vacation maybe after having told fifty other people first so the highs are not that high and lows aren't that low. with that said, it is a good story and I was glad to have the missing parts from the other stories.
The series gets better and better the more I listen to it. Definite worth the listen/read.

A retelling of The Last Colony but from Zoey’s perspective. As it was mostly a known story, my expectations were low - yet I was pleasantly surprised that I enjoyed this YA oriented story where we learned even more about the Old Man’s War universe.
