I was really really looking forward to this book and unfortunately it turned out to be a huge disappointment. There are two sort of “cultures” in this book that felt like they were just Scottish and English with different names tacked on. I’m not sure why the author did this, perhaps it was to avoid the very blatant cultural appropriation that is evident when she speaks of the Maclish people. I think it would be less offensive if she had just called them Scottish as the narrator for the audiobook speaks with a Scottish accent. Additionally when one of the male characters reveals that he is gay, the FMC only THEN reveals that she is bisexual. Never before when the FMC had previously mentioned this character, whom she was now supposedly “in love with”, did she mention this. This time felt as if the author was using sexual orientation as a plot device and comes across as very disingenuous and false. I unfortunately couldn’t continue giving this book my time or attention and as of now have DNFd it.
