i’m in agony

The Shadow Wand is the third book in the Black Witch Chronicles. We find Elloren and her group all separated and off on different tasks. Elloren is floundering and unsure, scared of her power. When things go sideways she has to escape back to Gardeneria and Lukas.

This book felt rushed. There was a lot of setup in the first third of the book including many new characters to learn, including Death Fae. At the beginning of the book, each chapter is told from a different point of view from many different characters. Some of what happens also didn't feel authentic. I still enjoyed the story, but this volume is not as good as the first two in the series.

Deeply disappointed!

Pros
- finally some multiple perspectives
- some random character moments in there. Being seen for who you are, love that.

Cons
- A 13 year old claims there's a nation-wide conspiracy. You, a powerful military and politicial leader with a vast array of connections, DOES NOTHING TO CORROBRATE THAT. The evidence? These two people are exhibiting signs of religious trauma. Bruh.
- Your effective fiancee is reported to be dead by people who will benefit from spreading this story. You choose to believe this fully and convince yourself to move on emotionally within like 3 weeks. Wtf.
- Bootcamp tactics are effective because they effectively trauma-bond a unit together and solidify a heirarchy. Sleep-depriving and emotionally abusing the equivalent of a human nuke to "toughen her up" is not only wildly dangerous, it doesn't even make sense. It makes Significantly more sense to train someone by being strict, but communicating clearly and building up someone's confidence over time. For an author who usually handles emotional conflict in a nuanced way, I was shocked at this decision.
- I was hoping to get some double agent angst in this book. Instead Elloren runs around Gardenia being bullied, crying, and yelling at people. I wasn't bothered by her in earlier books because she was naive and learning. This book just made her look like an idiot.
- Somehow we get multiple perspectives without learning very much about the internal life of these other characters. I wanted more.
- I wanted more from the death of the Aunt. It was a "blink and you miss it" level of plot. For an influential character, even if it doesn't turn out to be a real death, there should have been more weight.

Idk man. Maybe Forest was pressured to write this very quickly and thats why it suffered. For enjoying the first two of this series so much, I was really surprised at the emotional incoherence of this book.

This series got better and better along the way. I couldn’t put it down. Up to the next book!
