The drama and tension rises in the third instalment of THE BLACK WITCH CHRONICLES.

Elloren Gardner is beset on all sides as she struggles to come to terms with her identity as the Black Witch. As the Magedom gathers its forces and enemies, Elloren must turn to the enigmatic Lukas Grey for protection and learn to grow her own power.

While it was great to see Elloren coming to terms with her powers and her fear, it did come across a little much at times. She is a highly emotional character completely out of her depths and I understood many of her reactions, though I wished they’d been toned down a little near the end.

Lukas is compelling and devoted, a good man in a bad situation and trying to make the best of it for the sake of others. He and Elloren had many great scenes as they grew closer together throughout the book.

There are many parts to THE SHADOW WAND, and I was surprised to see how many side characters were given moments in the spotlight. They each had interesting moments as they struggled with the reality of different societies in Erthia and their place in them. Nothing is simple and change is a slow, agonizing process.

The plot takes its time, with much of the story focused on Elloren’s emotional journey as her life is thrown into chaos and grief. It almost borders on the melodramatic, but I enjoy plenty of drama with elegant descriptions, romance, and tense action scenes.

The prose is good, though I noticed many word and phrase repetitions.

There are plenty of loose threads to tie up, and I’m excited to see what comes next!

So far this book in the series has been the most action packed.  Elloren is FINALLY starting to break out of her timid shell and gain confidence. I have been waiting for this! But the biggest thing was the ending. WOW. I cried, got goose bumps, and went into shock all within a few pages. The Shadow Wand was a fantastic book and for sure my favorite so far in the series. I look forward to continue reading The Black Witch Series.

Filler, a LONG filler, but I can’t wait for the last book in the series!

Sadly, my least favorite of the three books. The first was sooooo good that I read it twice through back to back. The stuff about affinity lines reaching out here and there got on my nerves. The chapter about Tierney talking to the death fae was so long and drawn out, I feel like a ten minute conversation took me an hour to read about. Elloren was so whiny and wishy-washy I really wanted to give her a good smack. I think I’ll read The Black Witch again a to cheer myself up.
