Well, that was weird. I enjoyed the quiet mystery of the story, but don't expect to find out what's going on. There's a woman living alone in a small house with a yard, with high brick walls around it. She's always lived there, and has always been alone. Her meals are provided for her, and she is educated and entertained by a t.v. screen on the wall, run by an AI called Shiatsung. It will answer most questions she has, but won't answer questions about who she is, how she got there, what's outside, etc. She starts trying to find answers for herself- what will she find?
The story is good in its vaguery; the woman's isolation is palpable, and the amount of surveillance and control she's under is unnerving for the reader, though she has known nothing else. The simple lines of the artwork add to the mundanity of her limited world. I don't want to say any more about the story, except to say if you get frustrated by ambivalent endings, this might not be the book for you. It worked for me though!
