The Roles We Play is a very introspective, personal book in which the author explores her identity within her family and as a British Muslim woman of Pakistani heritage who no longer observes or believes in many aspects which previously underpinned her identity. A wide variety of themes are explored - feminism, racism, culture, religion, colonialism, migration and most of all identity and belonging. I was also interested in some of the history, particularly a dam built after partition which forced many farming families off their land and eventually led to them migrating to the UK. The colour palette is muted and the layout is often full page spreads and not the stereotypical comic strip appearance. I found it quiet, soothing and contemplative, encouraging me to slow down and really think about the issues the author was grappling with. A fun addition was a song selected by the author to accompany each chapter which made for a really immersive experience as I listened as I read.

This was such an interesting graphic memoir. Khan explores some complex issues, including identity, belonging and patriarchy and her illustrations really help convey her feelings, particularly about her complicated relationship with religion and her family. She's an architectural designer and that certainly comes across in her art style which is very detailed and structured.
