Katherine Rundell is, undeniably, a beautiful writer. She has an astounding ability to use precisely the right language for precisely the right moment, her observations being so astute that you're left wondering how it could have been described in any other way. In Rooftoppers, however, her gorgeous prose was not enough to make the entire novel sing. Her characters felt more like passerby's that you might share a small conversation with at a bus stop or in a queue, rather than fully-fleshed out people. Sophie's drive to find her mother was endearing and Matteo's resourcefulness led to some amusing conversations, but I am could not tell you more about them beyond that. The dynamic between Sophie and her found-father Charles was, by far, Rooftopper's greatest strength, although that relationship unfortunately took a backseat in the latter half. I completely understand the hype for Rooftoppers and I can see why this has become a staple in schools and libraries alike. For me, however, it was lacking the heart in its story and character that Katherine Rundell's stunning prose had in spades.
