One word: Amazing.

Only it was a little unbelievable that the characters were 16 to 18; I kept thinking of them as adults. But it's okay; it's fiction, I guess.

I loved every aspect of this book and cannot wait to read the sequel. Because, damn, the ending.

What a cliffhanger.

It started off okay, not that great, but when it started picking up pace, that was the only book I was picking up (forget my textbooks). I loved looking into multiple characters' views, and not just, like, two main ones or something. I loved the dynamic with each of the "crows" especially Kanej and Helnik. Ugh. They are so beautiful. I loved how each story was a branch of a bigger tree and each backstory led to one main plot. It was so beautifully woven together, like, Bardugo did a fantastic job.

Every chapter/POV was just the right amount of words and had the right amount of distinction, so it was such an easy read. I was completely in love with Kaz's POV of course. (I think I have a thing for morally gray MMC).

Now it's time for the sequel :>

Technically a reread, but it was years ago so I hardly remembered much. But, God, I missed good YA like this. Literally every single page is 10/10, no notes – I often found myself realising while reading that I genuinely had no complaints on any of the choices Leigh Bardugo made with the plot, the characters, thr world or even the writing style. It's been ages since a fantasy book has had this kind of a grip on me haha.

Leigh Bardugo is one of my favorite authors and this book is a big part of why. The characters just pull you into the story and you can't help but care about and root for them no matter how questionable their actions. On top of that, this series has an incredibly diverse cast with a story that explores all of their backgrounds in a meaningful and natural way. No trait is depicted as good or bad from nationality to orientation to religion and there are few authors who manage that level of authenticity. It also helps a great deal that all of the romantic pairings are a done deal from page one it's just a matter of when.
