Edit (2nd read):
one of my favorite books to this day, it's perfect in every aspect. though i do have to say that the representation isn't as perfect as people say. it's definitely better than most YA and deserves the praise, but some somewhat harmful stereotypes are still there (plus some tropes than i don't particularly fw, like the whole centrist view of Matthias being a druskelle, or the oppressed x oppressor ships.... you can tell it was written by a white american lmao. in any case, it's still definitely enjoyable (and hands down the best out of the Grishaverse), even if time has made me seen more flaws in it).

with this book, however, i was all in. i find that i really enjoy multiple povs and these were paced extremely well, managing to intersperse wonderful amounts of interpersonal and persona development with just enough mystery to keep me on my toes as a reader. one thing ive always liked about bardugo's writing is that her characters miss just enough to keep me interested -- as in theyre competent enough that i dont get frustrated but theyre also not complete know-it-alls that make the story boring.
full honesty, i docked half a star because i definitely saw the ending coming in a vague fashion, and the way it unfolded bugged me lol, but character development i guess? something for a sequel? and full full honesty?? no kissing smh smh but damn do i love emotional intimacy

THE CHARACTERS. I JUST LOVED THEM SO MUCH. They’re so well developed and have the best personalities. I genuinely wish they were real.

So many twists and turns, so many clever plot points, endless times when you think it’s all going to come crashing down and then suddenly the plan has been there all along and it all clicks in to place.
Can’t wait to read the second book.
