This book took me completely by surprise. I read the entire thing in one sitting, never wanting to tear my eyes away from the page. Alexis Hall’s hilarious, self-aware, sarcastic, and deeply (and shockingly) poignant writing kept me enthralled from the first page to the last. I got the cheesy, self-aware British romcom I signed up for (a much more satisfying one than I could have hoped for), in addition to a lot of emotional, self-reflective, sad truths that really hit home for me.

The characters are all loveable in their own capacities, of course Luc and Oliver (both complex and charming) but also the side characters. All of them shine, and I really mean all of them. Upon first introduction to Luc’s friend and work groups, I could never expect to love them as much as I did; Alex and Rhys are some of the most hilarious characters I’ve ever had the pleasure of reading about, and Bridge, Priya, the James Royce-Royces (impressive, considering they are never differentiated and one of them barely speaks), Sophie, and Ben were all wonderful additions to a great cast of characters.

The romance is, of course, complicated in the way romcoms must be to preserve plot but also in a way that feels human and normal. There were moments where I genuinely wondered if Luc and Oliver would be able to work it out, and I really worried about their future. I was invested from the start and the humanity and heart of this book really sold it to me, this book is near perfect to me in emotional pull, charm, wit, and humor.

I didn’t care for the main character and the writing style wasn’t for me.

I loved this, don’t get me wrong. But the breaking up and getting back together and breaking up again got kind of old for me? That’s really my only complaint. Well, that and I got tired of Luc calling himself a fuck up or a bad person constantly. But anyway, I’m looking forward to reading the sequel. I loved pretty much every character and even though I was annoyed, I was absolutely hoping they’d get back together (again) at the end.

This was adorable and hilarious and awesome and absolutely brilliantly written. I can’t give it five stars because I have too much Serious Literature on my list to fairly give it that spot, but it gets all of my recommendations.
