This novella serves as a prequel to Fonda Lee's amazing "Jade City". It features cameos from several characters in the first novel, but would also work well as a standalone story or an entry into the main trilogy.
This story features a shop employee trying to solve the theft of a prized weapon. It is structured as a traditional "whodunit" with several red herrings and twists, but ultimately due to the short length the culprit was a fairly easy guess.
Despite this, I loved the new cast of characters, and I would read anything that Fonda Lee chooses to write in the "Green Bone Saga" world. Not quite as intricate as the full-length novels, but still very fun!

It was so fun to return to this world. I really enjoyed getting the perspective of someone outside of the clans, and Lee used it to continue to expand and flesh out the world. It certainly wasn’t as gripping as her longer books, but definitely worth the read if you can get your hands on a copy.

The entirety of the Green Bone Saga is perfection.
I loved reading about Janloon and its politics and societal (dis)advantages from a neutral clan member. This should be read after Jade Legacy to really appreciate all the cameos and Easter eggs. Fonda Lee exceeds in pacing and character development, because in less than 150 pages, I became so attached to our new trio of characters.

This is a letdown. Pulo is not a great central character and came across as whiny. I love the pulpiness of the original series but I think it works better for me in reading form, where I can read very fast.

Novella, VERY short at only 112 pages. Good stuff, up to the standards of the mainline trilogy. I'd definitely read the mainline books first; there's a lot of culture that, while explained briefly, you'd be better off understanding from them. It's also a prequel to those books, so you'll see a handful of the same characters earlier in their lives.
