“We’re fighting for the same thing. Why do you keep trying to do it alone?”

When Tau's world was shattered by loss, he decided to turn himself into a weapon. A weapon meant to seek out and destroy the men who caused his pain. This story steeped in African symbolism was action-packed from the first page.   The story was unique in the realm of fantasy stories which I highly enjoyed.  I found myself having empathy for Tau, but also annoyance as he would not listen to anybody. He was so engulfed in his rage and need for revenge that it began to affect those around him. And when dealing with a war that's been raging for 200 cycles, that selfishness can get those around you killed. By the end of the book, I didn't see much growth in Tau. His sole focus was still on revenge.  Maybe that growth will come in the next book. The losses that Tau endured throughout the course of this book have me hoping that he will endure and become the man that his father knew he could be.

A story when grief and revenge hold hands. The main character Toa is focused on avenging his father's death through rigorous combat training to get to those responsible. There is a harsh caste system and the glossary for this story is necessary, but easy to follow once in a rythem. The magic system added some nuance and interesting depth to the story, but played a more minor role. This story is less about actual dragons and about the anger and rage of oppression, injustices and the actions that follow. The last quarter of the book really packed a punch and set up for the second book well.

Tau is up there with Violet from fourth wing and fitz from farseer as some of the most unbearable protagonists I've had the unfortunate experience of following
