3.95 AVERAGE

This whole series would be great for kids (and adults). Kids like to be taken seriously and these books allow them to address topics usually reserved for WWII lit.

Reading this series as a kid and now rereading them post-2016 is... a lot. This is one of those cases when "dystopian" sounds very close to actual news broadcasts. It was written in the early 2000s. Despite being dark as hell, these were much easier to read in the before times.

This is an exciting continuation to the Shadow Children series. We follow yet another hidden child, Matthias. He has a completely different, equally exciting, backstory, to Luke, Nina , Trey.
Over the course of the novel we watch him discover his inner strength,
Spoilerand forge his own identity, learn to rely on himself and his capabilities, even when not with his two siblings
. And, do what’s right. Even when it’s hard. Even when it’s scary. Even when it’s different anything he’s ever done before.

Fighting evil is a constant theme in this novel. Matthias explores questions of how to do what’s right, and whether or not it’s possible to do the right thing, while siding with the bad guys.

Content:
Violence: death, blood, peril, and extreme fear. There are starving people, exploding buildings and mourning of deaths.
SpoilerMatthias’ two siblings are injured, and he leaves them to get help, and is sure they died. Only towards the end of the book does he discover they’re still alive.

Romance: some mentions of noticing women.
SpoilerMatthias and Nina meet in a closet to plan their escape. They’re caught, and a guard laughs it off as young love, and jokes that they didn’t find them kissing. They share a goodbye hug.

Religion: mentions of God, purpose, and doing good for the world. Twice, Matthias questions if God is listening. Once he thinks that the population police building is a cathedral A cathedral where people worship evil.

Definitely top three strongest of the series.

Sorry, I can’t get over “Tiddy” lol.

Some parts were slow, but was still enjoyable to read.

this one was so good honestly; still tackles heavy topics and has satisfying overarching themes and lessons that are handled with the right amount of subtlety, and i just think matthias is a good character and his growth in this was nice to see tbh :) easily one of my favorites of the series
