Only Hibbert could start a book at my least favorite moment in a romance novel, the conflict, and still make me read more. Despite the length of this one, she manages to pack all the emotional tension that she is so adept at wielding in her longer books. The organic progression and slow reveal of feelings are done with perfect execution. I was equally drawn in by the plot as I was the relationship. The spice is proportional to the length but doesn’t lose any of its heat for it.

My only complaint is that I wish the FMC had more distinctive personality traits to set her apart for Hibbert’s other heroines. She has one character archetype (the loud mouthed, sarcastic, hyper-independent woman with a soft underbelly once you get past the walls) that she has perfected and adds slight variations to with each book. I’m not complaining because I love this archetype but this particular FMC didn’t have the extra twist to make her unique.
