A challenging read but nonetheless engaging and interesting—I recommend setting aside some time for this one. Ross’s style can be difficult at times and the content of this book is very dense; likely inaccessible to anyone not familiar at least with queer theory and theories of race, but familiarity with African American history and literature would be a huge help.

Despite its difficulties, Ross makes a compelling intervention in understandings of black masculinity and how we might understand the figure of the “sissy” as part of black (cis) manhood. I think this would be an edifying read for anyone interested in theories of black gender, black resistances to white supremacy, and the last chapter in particular has keen insights into race and sexuality in the world of modern sports—though as a whole Ross is keen to decouple the sissy from homosexuality.
