Brillant !

Slow start. I didn’t really care for all the back and forth initially. Not a terrible read.

3.5 This was my first Mary Higgins Clark and I was not disappointed! It did seem to drag on in the middle which is why I didn’t give four stars.

3 Stars
Laurie Kenyon was kidnapped as a child by two God loving psychopaths, in result she developed multiple personality disorder. After being accused of college professor Allan Grant's murder, this is the only thing that might lower or change her sentence.

The book started off okay, it wasn't great, but it was okay. The synopsis on the back mentioned the murder of Grant as mentioned above, so I did not expect him to die after 100 pages. I think that took too long, also the book began to drag following his death.

The climax of the book wasn't very clear to me, as it was very easy to figure out the real killer
Spoilerhis wife Karen Grant, who liked money
after one line in the middle of the book. I give the book more than two stars because the kidnappers part of the book and the lead up to the final moment was actually quite entertaining and good.

Multiple personality disorder is not something I have a lot of knowledge about, so I don't know how to properly critique that part. But, I did find it interesting
Spoilerespecially the revealing of the Lee alter, I actually did not see that coming

Basically I read this book to cleanse my pallet and reboot my servers for more sci-fi, fantasy YA.

Good lord, I've now read two of Mary Higgins Clark's books and both involved child molestation and memory loss. This one added the trope of dissociative identity disorder, which may have been new and exciting at the time of publication but is definitely played all the way out now. Frankly, the only reason I gave it two stars is that the last thirty pages or so did have some decent tension, but there was so much unpleasantness to slog through to get there. It took me twenty years to give Mary Higgins Clark another go, figuring maybe I was just too young for the subject matter, but nope, seems her writing style is just not for me in any way. Maybe I'll give her a try again in another twenty years.

Edited to say that after reflecting on it and letting the ending tension wear off, I bumped it down to one star. I really truly did not care for it.
