"Family isn't about being the same. It's about looking after one another.”

Jo and Orla must complete a series of tasks to help save the town. There's some fun little creatures and fae.

The art and page layouts were pleasing to look at!

Jo’s family was so wholesome and sweet. It was nice to see them joking around with each other.

Queer sapphic / WLW rep

Without a village witch, magic gets weird. Fae, strange animal behavior, invasive plants, and things that wouldn't feel out of place in a Ghibli movie abound. The visuals are amazing.

Mamo reminds me of the Tea Dragon Society books, but a bit darker and more mature.

Mamo is a fantastically paced graphic novel about a young, reluctant hedge witch - Orla - who gets dragged back to a place she wishes she left behind. Orla teams up with Jo to face what the death of her grandmother Mamo has left behind for her former hometown.

With gorgeous artwork and loveable main characters, readers will be met with a wholesome adventure that can be happily consumed in a single sitting. You will left wanting more, just because it is just so darn enjoyable.

Milledge is absolutely an author/illustrator I will be revisiting without hesitation.

This was an adorable graphic novel with a cute sapphic side plot. The plot is very simple, with not much more to it than what's in the summary, but I'm glad it wasn't padded with filler. This way the story was short and sweet, taking just as long as it needed and no longer. The character interactions were really the star of the show, here.

While anyone can appreciate the love story, I feel the themes of being fundamentally misunderstood by family will resonate strongest with a queer audience. I wouldn't go so far as to say that the magic in this story was a metaphor for anything, but Orla's struggle certainly had parallels.

I loved this and would definitely have read more if the story had continued. There was a scene about staying in your hometown that resonated with me so deeply. I loved the magic system, and the element of sharing your power amplifying it is just lovely. The conflict was born out of childhood trauma, but it wasn't depressing and didn't feel especially heavy either. It was honest and heartwarming without being cheesy.
