I really like it, I was expecting something else, I don't know, more secrets, a bit more of a thriller, but I was happy with th actual story.
It took a while for me to get invested in it, but once it happened I couldn't put down the book.
It treats topics of family expectations, childhood "traumas" in a very realistic way.
I will definitely come back to this book once I have children.

2,5 - 3: an sich interessant geschrieben, aber viel zu viele details zu der familie - hatte einen thriller erwartet und eine familiengeschichte bekommen, bei seite 150 aufgehört.

I only really read this because it was the only Celeste Ng book at the store and I had been wanting to read her writing for a while. I can say after finishing it in 2 days that I absolutely love this book. It’s so heartbreaking and raw. I love that it explores not just the events of Lydia’s death but also the impact it has on her family and every little thing that led up to it happening. It’s a painful reminder of how little you can know about another person and how in some ways we are all self absorbed with our personal lives. It is beautifully written in a way that is profound and detailed but still easy to read. It's a book I know I will spend the rest of my life wishing I could read again for the first time.

I don’t know if I am the only one but I like several of the characters spent the entire book wishing that Lydia’s death had been caused by someone. I think though that the fact that it wasn’t murder but merely an accident/suicide esc makes it feel so much more real. The book in some way serves as a reminder that sometimes things just happen and there isn’t someone out there you can place the blame on. It hurts in the end to find out how she really dies but it’s simply the truth.

I loved all of the perspectives in this book and how Ng moves fluidly between them. The many complex relationships left me with lots to think about. It was also impactful to me as a parent.

This is the kind of book I would love to read with my AP Lit class. There is so much to unpack. The characters are full of depth and nuance. The relationships are messy and complicated yet still so full of love. The story is heartbreaking and beautiful. The literature teacher in me couldn’t stop making connections or thinking “this would be great to discuss in an open response essay on the AP exam.” And from a lit teacher, that’s just about the highest compliment I can give a book.
I didn’t rate it 5 stars because, to me, 5 stars is a high bar. It means I will *definitely* read the book again one day. And I’m just not sure this book qualifies for that rating from me. Unless I decide to teach it.
