Overall the story had a good flow and the worldbuilding principles with the tribes are very interesting, but too often I felt like Linus was just an effective way to "tell" the history of the world rather than to "show" it, because he didn't know anything about this world. I felt like I needed to know more about the world and the information was just chaotically given to me, disrupting the reading experience a little bit.

I feel like I should have read the other series in this universe first, although it is implied that this can be read separately. Still, I feel like I'm missing something.

However, to say something positive, I feel like the relationship between two certain characters had a nice build-up and excellent amounts of tension.

I'm not exactly sure how much I liked this book. It was good, but that's it. There was nothing else to it. I'm not even sure what I'm supposed to be worried about. So the villain isn't exactly the villain? What is he, exactly? What is the point of our heroine not having supernatural powers while everyone else does? To make her less of an overpowered girl like so many other YA heroines? It was kind of pointless.
I'm so confused about the ending. It was like the end of a chapter, and you'd expect to turn the page and read more about what the heck is happening (I'm still wondering what the heck IS happening, to be honest?!), and it's just over? Worst. Ending. Ever. And not even in a plot-twisty way. It just ended and it was kind of anti-climactic.
I'm still planning on continuing this series, just so I can say I didn't give up, but I'm not super interesting in these books. I practically had to force myself to read this book, and that rarely happens with me.

Wow, just wow! This is such a neat book! It had so many twists and turns that it kept you guessing from page 1. I love the main character, Bryn, and I admire not only her tenacity but how that causes her to see the good in people when others don't. She has a stubborn belief that they are good, when everyone else is sure they're not! :-) I'm excited to read the other books in this series.

I enjoyed the plot of this book. The premise was intriguing and I liked how it gave a new view of the changelings.

I only rated it three stars because halfway through I realized that I was bugged by the repetitiveness of the first person. "I said..." "Then I..." "I wanted..." Etc.

That and the ending was okay. I didn't expect a cliffhanger but honestly I feel like I didn't get anything with the end. Maybe it could just be me.

I absolutely adore the cover of this book! I actually can't stop looking at it. One of the best covers I have seen for a while!

Anyway onto the review. Bearing in mind I work full time, I am amazed at how quickly I read this book! It must have only taken half a day, I just could not stop turning the pages and reading on.
Frostfire is a return to the Trylle series, which I have shockingly not yet read, but they are definitely on my book radar and even more so now. If you like me have not read the Trylle series, don't worry as you do not need to read those books to enjoy this fab new series.

I found this so easy to get into. Amanda Hocking easily creates a world to get lost in and at the same time make it feel so real. I have read loads of stories about witches, vampires, wearwolves and the like, but this is my first story that has been written about trolls and not your stereotypical trolls either and it worked really well!

I loved immersing myself in the world of the Kanin tribe, it really sounded like a fairytale type place, with the beautiful houses, castles and somehow the coldness of it and the frost made it seem magical. I quickly warmed to the main character Bryn as well, despite some of her views being a bit harsh especially when it came to love and family. She is a strong and independent female character which I am really pleased to see cropping up a lot in fiction! I also found the fragile relationships between each of the tribes really interesting and have a feeling more is yet to come between each of the tribes, especially with what came to light at the end!

The only slight complaint I have was this first book in the series felt very much like an introduction to the trilogy, not a lot happens in the way of action, but I am really excited for the next in the series as I know there is a lot yet to come!

A great start to the Kanin Chronicles series!

I gave this book 3/5 stars, not because it did anything SPECIALLY wrong, it just never quite hit the mark for me. Other readers might really enjoy it, but it's just not my ideal book, I think.

["Before when we were talking, were you asking why HER?" The aurora above us reflected on his face, and his dark eyes were filled with heat. "Or were you asking why NOT you?"]

And this ladies and gentlemen is where I yelled "OH MY WORD!" and then laughed so hard I nearly fell off of the treadmill.

Better than the Trylle novels? Possibly. I love this! I think the mystery of what's actually happening is good. The "love" story is a big iffy, again, it's more of a love shape than a love triangle. Bryn definitely has a different viewpoint than Wendy and I like that. I think if it was too similar I wouldn't like the story as much. Bryn is great. She's flawed, she obviously has an adversion to children, and she apparently doesn't have the ability to show emotion to people she cares about. But I understand it.

Her friends Tilda and Ember are great, I like their characters, and I like Linus. I kinda love Ridley as confused and confusing as he is. He's pretty awesome.

The royals here are very MEH. I tend to not like royals in YA novels, they're always the bad guys. Someone needs to fix that.

Konstantin is a very interesting character, I'm excited to see where he takes the story line.

The writing is good, I enjoy Hocking's work. They're easy to read through and enjoyable.

If you've not read the Trylle novels (and you should because they're great) and you're wondering if you can read this series first, you absolutely can but it will spoil the final couples of Trylle. So if you plan to read both, read the Trylle novels first. If you plan to just read the Kanin, that's fine too, the first book explains enough that you don't need the backstory from Trylle to help you figure out what's going on.

A very fast & easy wintry read for me - but unfortunately there's nothing that particularly stood out to me. While the writing is really accessible & I liked the winter vibes (fitting for the month of December), I felt that the characterisation fell flat and the plot was rather predictable - thanks to the lackluster romance. Again, I think it's my personal preference that I don't usually enjoy when romance takes over the entire novel. Ultimately this is a light read, but I felt unsatisfied by the lack of substance.
