I'm not sorry that I read this, but I found the main character mostly repellent. It was like reading about an undiagnosed schizophrenic person. I couldn't understand her motivation, most of her decision and her tendency to scream. I mean, did "scream" mean something else in the 50s? Maybe not, since Audrey Hepburn is always eliciting these horrible screeches in movies of the era. Anyway, I guess I rated it as "liked it" because I didn't mind the overall experience of reading the book. At the very least, it was an interesting insight into the era and its mores.
This type of writing style drives me nuts. I wanted to keep going so I could read more about Paris and it's loveliness, but I couldn't get into it.

Gorgeous and silly and fun. rip sally jay gorce you would have loved lana del rey and tinder
i've never quite factored in the word “unlikeable” when thinking about protags. an “unlikeable” narrator is just a complicated one—“ Les Compliques.” the worst crime is if a protagonist is boring (which means the writing is boring)— and i can definitely say that our 20 year old faildaughter is not boring. Dundy’s prose is sparky, current, and full of life. this matches our dear Sally Jay to a T. what 20 year old doesn’t go abroad and fuck up everything in her life? the only thing that felt dated was the ending.
I waxed hot and cold on this one. At times I enjoyed it. At other times I berated myself for continuing to read "another stupid book." Now I've finished and the final verdict it.....it was good. I liked it. The reviews don't help though. Telling the reader how fabulous a book is before they've even opened the first page just sets them up for disappointment. I kept looking for "fabulous" or worse yet, for "hilarious" and since my sense of humor is uniquely my own, I never found the critic's back-slapping hilarity. But I did eventually laugh and I did eventually decide that continuing to read this book was the right decision.
Who knows? I might even read it again some day. Maybe in ten years or so.
