I like that we find dragons in both Eastern and Western stories, and how would those dragons feel about each other? Living on opposite sides of the world, they have assumptions about the other, and they'd rather keep to themselves just in case the other dragons are bigger, fiercer, or have bluer, hotter fire. In the end, the dragons do end up meeting and find that their differences can be appreciated. Nice book to bring up discussions of how we react to "the other".

I wondered with the layout, however. It threw me at the start. The pages about East Dragon were on the left-hand side, and the West Dragon pages were on the right-hand side. Wouldn't it have made more directional sense to flip these? Perhaps I'm the only one who saw this and had to review the "Never Eat Soggy Waffles" information in my head.

East Dragon and West Dragon aren't friends. West Dragon wants to get rid of some knights that bother him. He sends them on a treasure hunt. They are captured. West Dragon saves them. As they escape, East Dragon helps them cross the ocean. The dragons decide to become friends. The story feels somewhat disjointed without clear transitions. The story is also very heavy on text. It may be more enjoyable for adults that will comprehend the differences between east and west within context and appreciate the twist of the dragon saving the knights.

Kind of an odd convoluted story, but the pictures are cute and I think kids would like it.

I love how this book compares the differing mythology of Eastern and Western dragons, as well as showing how we can overcome differences and unfounded prejudices.

East Dragon and West Dragon have never met, and they don't plan to. Each believes the other is scary. When a brave king and his hardy nights learn that West Dragon isn't the only fearsome creature out there, some dragons might have to step in to save the day.

I love dragons. I particularly appreciated the way that this book shows how different cultures value different things. When one takes the time to get to know someone, however, differences can't stop friendships from forming.
