Reviews with content warning for Addiction - Wishful Drinking

Candid, clever, and unafraid to air her own worst traits—Carrie Fisher was a very talented writer and comedian, who will unfortunately never be primarily remembered for those skills. This book is everything I was hoping for after leaving Shockaholic a touch disappointed. Well worth the read if you’re a fan of hers or if you just like a quick celebrity memoir.

Oh Carrie. I wanted to sit in a rocking chair, pull her into my lap and tell her it would all be okay. This was equal parts humor and cringe. I'm glad I finally got to this one. I was never a Star Wars fanatic, but I was always a Carrie fan.

This is a short collective of stories of Carrie Fisher's life, as written (and read) by the author. It's based on her travelling show, so it makes sense that it is somewhat all over the place, rather than a biography. The main themes are her mental illnesses and struggles she faced throughout her life and career. She has a comical and lighthearted way of reflecting on her life, but it could be because she went through electroconvulsive therapy to treat her depression. I was hoping for more thorough biography, but that is not what this book is. It is funny reading this today as it was published in 2009 and it almost felt like she predicted or spoke into existence some things that happened since.

While I love listening to autobiographies read by the author, she did read this as though it was one of her travelling performances. ie lots of yelling at the end of a sentence for emphasis.

This book got me out of the reading slump that comes from being in college.
I'm not a fan of memoirs generally because I think often the person writing them doesn't actually have anything to say, but Carrie fit a lot in a very small number of pages.
