The writing style of the book took a chapter or two to get used to, but I ended up really liking it. It was almost poetic, kind of philosophical, very descriptive of normal things but not in a boring way. You really got into the mind of the main character and that's where most of the suspense lay. I enjoyed the plot and the "makes you think" ending, but do wish that it was a bit clearer on what actually happened.

This wasn't my favorite of what I have read of Woolrich, but I still couldn't stop turning the pages until I had reached the end

A young woman, pregnant, traveling alone, befriends a couple on a train which is involved in a terrible wreck. A case of mistaken identity leads her into a new life, a safe life for her and her child. Suddenly , her past begins to catch up with her and leads her down a path of torment and damnation.

Like many Woolrich books this is a bleak story. No one ends up happy, no one gets what they want, but we explore the depths of passion and torment in the most classic gritty pulp style there is.

Một bí mật rồi lại bí mật đã nhấn chìm tình yêu đôi lứa như nào :))
P/s Sách không có yếu tố kinh dị, chỉ là bí ẩn theo tiết tấu chậm thôi

There is a certain unreality about his book. Beginning with a dream like refrain that seems to mimic the drift into deep sleep, the body of the book is more like glimpses than watching a traditional narrative unfold. As in a dream we see elements that convey the whole story but we are not quite ourselves. This becomes literally true for the main character who’s identity becomes fluid—she does so little to establish who she is at any time that, like a dream, events unfold with a kind of uncontrollable fate or destiny rather than as a result of her actions. There were moments where I fought this feeling at the beginning (probably why I have had lifelong sleeping problems) but the sooner you give yourself over, the more you will enjoy the book. Once this dream is set in motion, Woolrich manages suspense from thin air as if it is seeping from the walls. Every furtive step on a staircase or neighbor glimpsed from a window or tap on the shoulder during a dance feels heavy with portent. More often than not pay-off is deferred increasing the debt of suspense and by the end there are twists, hopes rise and fall and…you find yourself slipping out of the deep sleep you have been in for 200 pages. I had to surreptitiously agree not to wake up to truly enjoy the purgatory like ending of I MARRIED A DEAD MAN but I’m okay with that.

This had a lot of potential, but had one big flaw--the ending was totally ridiculous and unrealistic. There was an obvious answer to Bill and Patrice's dilemma. It was so glaringly obvious, it ruined the entire book for me.

Spoiler
Steve could have, and probably was killed by gamblers he had cheated. Neither Bill or Patrice killed him.

An extremely suspenseful, fast-paced noir thriller that's also totally maddening and frustrating. I was up all night reading it, but I'm not sure I liked it.
