If you love the Masterpiece series on PBS, then you will love this book. Victoria was such an interesting queen, and so full of spunkiness. I love that she was so confident with your knowledge that she would be queen, and that she was just insecure and naive enough to need a little help at the beginning of her reign. Which, of course, she gets from Lord M. Their relationship is very sweet, and he is endlessly kind and patient with her. Soon enough, she gains confidence in her ability to rule, and also, gets reacquainted with Albert. Of course, it’s a bit weird that they’re cousins, but they’re romance was so wonderful. It saddens me that they only had twenty years together. They were so in love. Again, trying to forget that they were cousins. Still, quite the romance. Bleh, cousins, though?

Scorrevole

My Thoughts

I must admit, I know nothing about history. Ok, ok, there are a few things that stuck around in my head after history class but it’s safe to say I’m far from a history nut. Now that’s not to say I don’t find interest in the History channel, it’s just sometimes it’s hard not to fall asleep while watching it, but if it’s historical fiction we’re talking about then sign. me. up!

I thoroughly enjoyed reading Victoria. After finishing it I went where everyone goes to find out facts these days, wikipedia. I wanted to see how much truth made up the backbone of Goodwin’s Victoria and I think it’s safe to say that there was definitely a decent amount of knowledge sprinkled in among the drama and intrigue. Victoria gives us a glimpse of a young woman’s journey to becoming a queen so many will learn to respect. I had so many emotions while reading, from praising Victoria’s push for independence to mourning with her over her heart’s desire in Lord Melbourne to relief as she comes to terms with the prospect of a marriage, the poor girl had plenty of ups and downs at the beginning of her reign.

The pacing of Victoria was a little slower than what I usually like but Goodwin does such a fabulous job with dialogue and painting the scene that I still had trouble tearing myself away from the pages. I’ve also been informed that Goodwin’s Victoria will be a mini series on PBS in January, I’m so excited to see the character on the small screen!

This was a fun, easy read. I really enjoyed this book.

Full Review:

3 Stars - I recommend if you enjoy historical fiction about the lives of historical figures.

This book is about Queen Victoria's early life. She began her reign at the age of just 18, and how she finds her place in the monarchy.

For me, this type of historical fiction is tough to read. I find that I enjoy situational historical fiction quite a bit more than something about a specific person. However, the short chapters helped me along and I was able to finish this somewhat slowly. I kept going back and forth between whether I thought Victoria was naive or she was really executing a plan to make her own way as a queen. Sometimes she was just so young, and self-centered. Other times the things that she fought for made sense. I also struggled with the other characters. I often felt bad for her mother, and frequently felt that she sort of deserved how things went. I mostly felt bad for Lord M though, he seemed in a tough spot. I started to enjoy the book a bit more toward the end when she finally gets to see Albert as an adult. Overall I found myself not overly compelled with Victoria's story, but the short chapters helped me power though. I am so far enjoying the show quite a bit more than the book! A rarity for me!

Right After Reading:

I think 3 stars... this was really slow for me, and felt long considering it spans such a short time. The short chapters helped me along. Enjoying the show much more.

This read more like a rom com book than a historical fiction and I really enjoyed it

I loved this book. I have seen the PBS version of Victoria and find that this book compliments it. The book brought remindes of what I watched and gave some more detail.
