It was definitely a companion for the show and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I do, however, wish there was a bit more than just the exact plot of the show. I wish there could have been extra scenes or even some more scenes fleshed out.

Very readable and enjoyable historical fiction about Queen Victoria's earliest days in her reign. The current PBS series is based on this novel, and the book does read like a screen or teleplay - which isn't a bad thing. Will be on the lookout for Goodwin's next.

Victoria was a page turner! Once I started reading I did not want to put it down. I live in the United States so I don't have any real knowledge about Kings and Queens but I silently cheered the teen Queen on as I flew through her story. I wanted to see her become a great Queen and I wanted her to find love.

I was disappointed that the Lord M romance went on as it did. I didn't realize he was that much older until the end. Although it was a page turner I kept waiting for a more substantial story to start. I waited for her to be the Queen she wanted to be and that she thought she was. I didn't really see it. The whole story was everyone trying to control her and in the end I think "they" won.

Honestly, I enjoyed the show better. This was too much like reading something I'd already watched, and the prose was not so great that it was indeed a better experience.

As someone who is shamelessly obsessed with the royal family and regency romances, this book was overall great fun to read.
While I admittedly came here for romance, I did find myself getting a little annoyed by the romantic twist to the relationship between Victoria and Lord Melbourne, her super old prime minister who was obsessed with her and kept comparing her to his dead wife, and was disappointed that the love interest I was REALLY there for (Prince Albert) only showed up when the book was 85% through. As a result, I was a bit miffed that we only got 60ish pages out of 400 dedicated to one of the greatest romances in the history of the monarchy.
However, this book still gets 4 stars because it completely sucked me in.
A rebellious teenager coming of age, crown jewels, political intrigue, scandals, and grand balls where demure conversation during the waltz leads to love? Yes please.

I enjoyed this book but having already watched the PBS miniseries (which I loved) created by the author, this felt redundant. It was pretty much exactly the same, down to scenes and dialogue. That's not necessarily a problem, it just made for a less exciting reading experience than I hoped.

This was a story of queen Victoria becoming the queen. It was a really frustrating read because many descriptions were repeated as if we wouldn’t notice. Also, some of the major plot lines were dropped/ made insignificant / like her gaining confidence and becoming a good queen. It focused too much on the romance which wasn’t developed well enough to make me satisfied
