I received a copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

As luck would have it, I started this book just after I started watching "Victoria" on PBS. One episode of that was enough- it was melodramatic and had a lot of plotting which ultimately came to nothing and just spun the wheels plot-wise.

The book echoes the beats of the show exactly, so if you want more of that you'll enjoy this. The writing itself is good and possibly more engaging than the TV version. I just wasn't interested in this very loose take on history, plumped up with a romance that didn't really happen.

I was excited to read this book because I enjoyed Goodwin's The American Heiress. It has been on my to read shelf since I heard about it and then I somehow managed to win a copy of it through a Goodreads giveaway. Since it is a fictional account of a young Queen Victoria much of the story is embellished or fabricated, but it is still certainly an entertaining one. Victoria is infuriating and childish for a good portion of the book. I seriously wanted to yell at her a few times for being so stubborn. However, I liked the Victoria of the second half of the book much better, especially after all the Lord Melbourne drama, so that made up for it. I do wish the book had been longer and included more of Victoria and Albert's relationship. If there is a sequel, I would most likely read it.

This reads like YA fluff. Boring.

I decided to read this book right after I enjoyed season 1 of the BBC TV show. I wasn’t expecting the book to be almost line per line identical to the show but it did help clarify things I had missed. I later found out that the writer was writing the book at the same time as she was writing the TV script so that made sense. Her writing style is so easy to read and follow and I loved reading about the relationship Victoria had with Melbourne. I didn’t enjoy it as much with Albert but I guess you can’t rewrite history... still a fantastic read. I love historical fiction!
