LOVED THIS BOOK! It had been on my TBR list since I first heard about it and while waiting for my turn to come up in the Library queue, I received a copy in the mail as Goodreads winner - no more waiting!

The way that Daisy Goodwin portrays Victoria and the key players in her life and the environment of time period transports you there. I wanted to be one of Victoria's ladies so I could fawn over Lord M, Albert and Ernst. I gritted my teeth every time John Conroy showed up. I felt sorry for the Duchess of Kent. This book made me want to time travel to 19th Century Victorian England.

Daisy Goodwin is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors... can't wait to read more from her. She has an artful way of pulling you into the story so you feel like you are there.

On a bit of a British royalty kick since I started watching "The Crown," so I picked this one up from the library. Interestingly, it focuses on the life of a young Victoria, beginning with her ascension to the monarchy and ending with her proposal to Prince Albert. I liked this small slice of her life, but wanted a little more. Victoria isn't the most likable character in this, mostly owing to her tremendous new responsibilities and the fact that she's a young woman of 18-19 with her own prerogatives. She's definitely a complex character--headstrong, but with good reason. She's fearful of not being queen in her own right, having her powers molded by other men in government. There's a lot of interesting tension at work here around the role of a woman in the monarchy, but I would've liked to read more of it. I think I'll find a biography next time.
