Criticisms I’ve read about this one are fair. It does become a bit redundant. There is a bit too much homogeneity among the types of booksellers and librarians featured. There are a few too many mentions of James Patterson. And the book’s organization makes no sense. However, it’s still a cozy read and I quite enjoyed the first 2/3, reading the personal experiences of “my people”. I was a bookseller at one point in a nice indie bookstore in the days before B&N swallowed up the industry, and before Amazon swallowed them. Anyway, this might be a better book if one reads little by little over a long haul. It is a cozy book, except for the essays relating the scourge of right wing book bans. However, even then, it was inspiring to hear accounts of librarians in the trenches fighting the good fight. “Secret Lives…” is a book enjoyed best if one’s expectations are lower.
