This book felt like if the book A Little Life had a baby with the tv show Mythic Quest.
It’s the tragic and complicated friendship arc without all the trauma and abuse, paired with the plot of Mythic Quest but more sad. Also, Marx was my favorite character, so I am pissed off that he dies so early…sure, it’s the middle of the book, but any time was too soon. He was the most likable character, and I get why his death was necessary to the plot and character development, but I hated it. Also, I really would have liked a content warning about a workplace shooting…was not prepared for that, and as a teacher, it hits too close to reality these days.
I am not at all a gamer, but this book almost makes me wish I was. I think I would love to play Ichigo.

Wow - what a rollercoaster. It took me almost the first half of this book to really get into it and then my library hold was over. 🙃  Almost two months later, I finished the last 2/5ths of this book in a couple hours.

I tend to forget a lot of books quickly after I read them, but surprisingly I remembered every detail from two months ago! I can’t say this was my favorite book, but it truly evoked a lot of emotions in me and the fact that it stayed with me means it’s deserving of the 5 stars. I also love a book where there are truly flaws to the characters, and you end up disliking them a lot throughout the process.

Heartbreaking and beautifully written.

Really read Jan 21-30, then finished March 26.

Is this book brilliant? Yes. But it also emotionally scarred me and left me so miserable halfway through that I had to put it away for over a month to gather strength to carry on.

I get why this book became so popular amongst Little Life lovers because this one is also a trauma and pain extravaganza. It starts innocent enough with two friends making games but halfway through the emotional pain starts and it only keeps getting worse and worse and worse till it became impossible for me to carry on reading. After a month-long break I came back, an apparent emotional masochist, to cry over Sam, over Sadie, over Marx, over their relationships, lack of thereof, their pain, their loneliness, their misunderstandings, their lack of communication, stubbornness, and that sheer amount of pure love that permeates every page.

The blurb is right - it is not a romance but it is story about love. It’s quite rare for books to put friendship at the forefront, with romance in the back, to show the complexities, messiness and importance of those connections that often transcend and outlast romantic relationships. Sadie and Sam’s story is epic. Often frustrating, overwhelming and contradictory but undeniably the most important connection in both their lives.

This book ripped my soul out, put my heart in the shredder and I’m saying thank you
