This book is very highly rated, and with the reviews, I was very excited for this book. It's extremely popular. So popular infact, that I had to wait 29 weeks for it on Libby.

While the story was one of friendship and business partners, it's a
sad, one sided love story that is never reciprocated.
If you do not like the miscommunication troupe (I do not), then you will not like this book.

Sam clearly has untreated PTSD, and possibly even autistic, and Sadie spends 60% of the book being upset with him, whilst not understanding him.
I found Sadie's chapters to be something I was dreading, and hoping they would pass quickly. She is hyper critical, and is unwilling to see anyone else's POV.
This book didn't have to be some grand love story, but it wasn't even close. It was sorely lacking a true wrap up. If there was a sequel to this, it is one I woul pass.
Rating higher, because it was so eloquently written, and touches on so many issues within society, and did have some hopeful insights.

Really wanted to like this, and at one point thought was going to turn around for me, then pretty much skipped an entire section. Maybe would have made a difference if I had ever been a gamer.

this is probably one where I'd be writing forever if I did a full review. I think it started off really strong but got a little lost midway through. it takes a turn that feels cheap and unnecessary to me. and in the end it felt like Sadie never really found agency, or maybe it was subtle and subdued when I wanted to hear her roar. It made her feel like less of a main character to me, which diluted the themes of the book.

aside from that, some of the social commentary felt out of place for the 90s/early 2000s
and the book is a little snobby, which will repel some readers.

overall I enjoyed it. but it's heavier than I was expecting so you've been warned

Fiction / Contemporary / Romance / Historical Fiction

TW:  Suicide, Grief, SA if not rape as BDSM needs to be consensual even if the victim tries to make themselves indifferent, cheating, homophobia, drug use, car accident, toxic relationships, gun violence. There are so many...

This was one of those books. It was a hard read. I am happy I read it, but I am not sure I liked it. I will definitely think about it for a while. I am not sure it was meant to be enjoyed? Or thought-provoking? Or just to relive the past? I failed in the 400 pages to ever find a purpose or moral of the story, aside from '2 selfish people should continue to forgive each other over and over and over...'

I also found it difficult to like many of the characters. Yet the nostalgia of it all allowed me to fit myself into the story and see the world through their eyes.
