This was an interesting read. The title and cool graphic design intrigued me. I went into it honestly not even really reading more than the first couple lines of the description. I have never read a book with this sort of plot line - gamers, growing pains, and even painful experiences of racism and discrimination all in one. The writing style was different- I read it digitally and simultaneously listened along with my spotify membership. It was easy to get immersed into this universe. I liked how there was a mix of present, past, and future AND first and third person- I’m telling y’all very different and yet it worked well for the most part. There were a few times I had to reread to make sure I understood who the narrator was embodying. I finished maybe an hour ago and am still digesting. I share the frustration with Sam and Sadie. On one side would’ve loved if they at least had an intimate experience but on the other side I wanted them to be both single and leave other characters alone with their bad communication skills and annoying behaviors. I am disheartened with how things went with Marx’s character. I liked the representation of disabilities, chronic pain, asian characters. However I wish this book included trigger warnings. I feel a bit overwhelmed and overexposed to the asian discrimination and gun violence the characters experienced. Too vulnerable for us bipoc. I am one who loves happy endings and this was as a whole bittersweet. I adored the link to the meeting up in the station and the ending - so sweet! I think that’s all for now. Give it a try.

as much as sadie claimed sam was a bad person, who sleeps with someone in a relationship (dov and then again marx) and one of those people is your best friend’s friend? like girl. I absolutely agree with sam that them being in a relationship which so shady they “hid” it like marx you really tainted yourself, but alas, it did skew sadie being favored. which arguably was intentional seeing how she got her way with dov and got his code and mentorship.

I am not into video games, but I really liked getting to know the gaming world. I didn’t know that designers could either make their own engine or use another games design. Also the friendships were dynamic and complex which I appreciated. I think that’s my favorite part of books is getting to know other peoples relationships in the story. 

Is it anti-feminist to not like Sadie? I felt like she always painted herself to be the victim in her relationship with Sam. It didn’t seem like Sam was ever trying to sabotage Sadie. He just wanted to make games with her. Sam could be cruel like when he told Marx that he’s an NPC. But I feel like Sadie accused Sam of things that weren’t true? I don’t know maybe the accusation of Sam putting her in a touch spot with Dov was true. But not necessarily all his fault either. Sadie never understood the pain that Sam went through with his foot. Maybe she was over it? Idk. With all this being said, it was easier to relate to Sadie than Sam. Sam’s story was harder to relate to because his experiences were different than mine.

The grief written into the book has been done so incredibly well. The amount of times I cried and at one point had to put the book down to sob for several minutes - it's beautiful. As someone who's maternal grandparents practically raised her, Sam's final talk with his grandfather reminded me of the final talks with my grandparents- the last 'I love yous' are the easiest and hardest to utter. Sam and Sadie's friendship is like most friendships between two people who have traumas in their lives - it's difficult and complicated but theee is so much love there between them. I stand by the decision to not have them end up together romantically! Sometimes staying friends with someone trumps being intimately together. Overall, I get the hype of this book. It's a hauntingly beautiful story about love, loss, trauma but friendships. l love it
