I’ve spent some time reflecting on this one, and my thoughts are still marinating. Zevin is an undeniably artful writer. Her prose is fast and easy to consume, while still being witty and smart. She has a knack that the best writers have for making tragedy feel human, both heartbreaking and hopeful.
I struggle to say it’s one of my favorites, because I found the duo of Sam and Sadie to be so frustrating, both so deeply flawed and selfish, that by the end I found it hard to route for them as individuals or as a team.
But the emotions she evoked and the world she built still was completely worth the read.
Not to mention, it got me back into gaming.

It’s overall sad, or gives me very emo vibes at least (like early 20s, in my feelings and loving it kind of vibes), and I loved it.

Story summary for myself

Sadie and Sam grow up together in their youth and seem to separate around high school/early college - for 6 years. They come back together as young adults and begin to make games together. Both of them are a little bit shit, broken in some ways. Then there’s Marks who is the best of them but also Sam calls him boring/an NPC. He loves them both but ends up having a baby with Sadie. The chapter (or chapters?) in which Marks is shot is told from his PoV when Sam and Sadie are out doing press tour for their new game. I don’t know how Marks knew what to do and how to stay calm in that type of situation.  Until that point I was definitely ambivalent about him as a character but after that I really felt like he was the glue that held everything together without anyone even realizing it. Is that the kind of person I want to be?

I‘ve never read a book like this before. It was so beautiful and sad and emotional and I was just really rooting for all these characters. The friendships in this book are the main focus and how they change throughout life. The most important theme is platonic love and the power and beauty of it, which I personally really enjoy reading about.

This was a propulsive read. The story is set in the world of game developers - I do not play games, so this was completely foreign to me. The two  main characters, Sam & Sadie grow and change in believable ways across the 20+ years of the book. The portrayal of grief and the way it tears life apart was one of the better characterizations I’ve read.

This story and these characters will stay with me for a long time. But it doesn’t do this book justice to separate the two, because the story is the characters and the characters are the story. I loved and hated and loved Sadie and Sam so much, much like they loved and hated and loved each other.

I totally understand why this book has so much hype. The characters are so interesting, as are their journeys. It was wonderful to watch them all grow up. However, the subplots relating to the professor
particularly, the abuse
felt uncomfortable. Yes, books should push limits of comfort, but it felt almost needless.
Their relationship could have been tumultuous and toxic without the graphics of the handcuffs. The power imbalance alone is  scarring and could have impacted Sadie enough throughout her life. The DV and the way everyone wanted her in the college days felt almost exploitative.
Perhaps it was a testament to what it was like to be a young beautiful woman in the 1990s—a different time. Sadie’s relationships felt complex, as were all of the relationships in the book. Sam was lovable, though flawed, and it was a treat to see inside his mind as he navigated how the relationships ebbed and flowed.

An emotional roller coaster watching two young people go from children to functioning adults.
