I can see why a lot of people gave it a lower rating. I felt it was very disjointed. Is it a memoir or how-to? Both? I was never sure from one chapter to the next. One thing for sure is that it's filled with the honest, self depreciating humor that I love from Issa Rae. I think it gave me a lot of background into her life and art. I'm looking forward to the next volume of this incredible woman's life story.

This is maybe more of a 3.5 star, but I enjoyed it. A couple of bits made me laugh out loud. I listened on audible and it’s a good narration by the author. I listened because I’m trying to read more non fiction, and to hear stories from cultures I don’t know - so the parts about visiting family in Senegal were interesting. I don’t actually know Issa Rae’s other work so some stuff probably went over my head, but she’s got a likeable style.

Loved this book, and the thoughtful mix of life advice, LOL worthy childhood stories, and the parallels between her stories and the premise of some of Insecure episodes. Perfect length and recommend audiobook!

Already loved Issa Rae, and this made me love her even more (didn’t know that was possible). I listened to this as an audiobook and having her read it just made it so much better.

When I finally got my hands on Issa Rae's book I was so excited to learn about the woman who made the series that I felt resonated with me, but it wasn't what I thought it would be. While this book was an easy and comical read, I'm not sure what I thought it would encompass. It was pretty much a mixture of her background growing up and the tips she used in her web series. Okay to read if you're looking for some light reading.
