I appreciate the humor Issa Rae has reflecting back on her life and all the mishaps that got her to the place that she’s at now. I wish it was a bit longer and highlighted her actual creative career.
I’m currently obsessed w reading auto biographies of people I want to be. Issa rocks she’s who I want my daughter to be. Loved this book.

As a huge fan of Issa Rae, this book is Issa personified. As an avid watcher of her web series and HBO hit show Insecure, I know that Issa is a witty, sarcastic, socially awkward black girl, and I relate to her. In this book, Issa tells stories of her childhood, teen years, and some of her adult years, describing how her multicultural upbringing had a hand in her awkwardness. Being sheltered from many things that her Los Angeles peers were used to had Issa craving to fit in within the worlds of music, TV, fashion, dating, etc. This book was a hilarious and relatable listen from one awkward black girl to another. I saw myself in Issa. I have one critique: I wish the book had at least two more chapters. I hate it ended on the co-worker chapter; it almost feels incomplete. Other than that, it was a great listen/read.
I've been a fan of Issa Rae for quite a while and like most of her other work, I enjoyed this piece of work from her. I would say this book was definitely one of the funner memoirs that I've read and didn't feel like a chore to get through. Throughout the memoir, Issa shares stories from her past and her inner thoughts on random topics which allows the reader to get to know her as a person, both for better and for worse. The tone was fairly conversational and the stories selected were pretty funny. If given the chance, I would definitely be willing to read a follow up sharing her experiences now that she's "made it."

After recently discovering and falling in love with writer Issa Rae's HBO show "Insecure", I was excited to read her book. Insecure is witty, incisive and features one of the best representations of female friendship I've seen on TV. Unfortunately, her book didn't deliver for me. It's in the style of your typical celebrity memoir. Some random anecdotes with know real connective thread, mixed with a few opinion essays, and endless explanations of how she got into a creative career. It felt disorganized and did not have any of the spark that I expected from such a hilarious woman. Was super let down by this - just watch insecure instead
