DID NOT FINISH

I stopped enjoying this book as I kept on reading it.

DID NOT FINISH

DNF: A few funny moments. However there were parts about being in an abusive relationship she was flippant about, I suppose not realizing still that it was abusive. A part of her having empathy but dumping some guy because he was too nice - contradictory. Some more self awareness and introspection would be nice before embarking on a memoir.

Love her.

okay idk how issa rae managed to read me like a book but SHE MADE THIS FOR ME TBH-

While this memoir was at times dealing with heavy topics- some that I could relate to and others, not so much- it wasn't fully despondent and at times I was literally laughing out loud from some of the jabs Issa commented that really made her trademark humor stand out. Her ABG (Awkward Black Girl) guides were hilarious yet relatable sections to read. While the last chapter of the book fell flat to me, I loved the book overall and would give it a solid 4.5/5 stars (but rounding up to support Black authors IKTR-)

I’ve had this book for a while, and just assumed it would be a great, hilarious read when I got around to it. Recovering from surgery, I read it all in one day, and was so disappointed! I love Insecure, and the ABG webseries, but this book wasn’t insightful, or funny, or well-written, and came across as some very lightly edited blog posts from a mid-20s woman without a whole lot to say. I’ll keep my hopes up for anything Issa writes or does in the future, but gah this book was boring.

I love Jo-Issa even more after reading this book! I wouldn't call this a memoir... its more of a collection of essays where Issa Rae talks about her life happenings. My favorite chapter is 'Halfrican' where Issa Rae talks about her (half) Senegalese culture and upbringing (in the US and frequently in Senegal). If you aren't familiar with Issa Rae, please google her and watch her YouTube series - 'Awkward Black Girl'! She's an amazing inspiration. This was a great kick-starter to my summer reading. Very enjoyable and of course, some bits were hilarious - duh, its Issa Rae!
